Spring Creek Reserve Moves Forward with Oval Reconstruction
The long-awaited reconstruction of Spring Creek Reserve is officially underway as Surf Coast Shire Council awarded the tender for the project this month. Victorian Sports Group has been selected to carry out the works on the oval, with a target completion date set for March next year. The project is designed to deliver a safer, more resilient playing surface that will serve the community for years to come.
The decision to upgrade Spring Creek Reserve follows council’s assessment that the existing oval had reached the end of its useful life. The surface no longer met year-round play standards, impacting cricket, football, and informal community use. With this upgrade, residents can expect a high-quality, all-weather facility capable of accommodating regular training, league matches, and casual recreation alike.
What the Upgrade Includes
Council and project planners outlined a comprehensive set of improvements aimed at enhancing safety, durability, and accessibility. Key components include:
- Improved oval drainage to reduce water pooling and mud, supporting consistent play during wet periods.
- Upgraded irrigation and new oval and sub-surface systems to maintain turf quality and resilience.
- New fencing, minor pavement adjustments, and kerb works to improve perimeter safety and accessibility.
- Line marking and community seating facilities, with bench seating slated for January next year as turf works near completion.
TC Services noted that the turf installation is scheduled to wrap up by December, with the broader site works continuing into January. The phased approach will minimize disruption while delivering a robust surface designed for multi-sport use and community events.
Community and Club Collaboration
Council acknowledged the important role of local clubs and community groups in supporting the project. Councillor Joel Grist highlighted the collaboration with the Torquay Cricket Club, which agreed to relocate their matches for the 2025/2026 season to facilitate the reconstruction. He said the club’s willingness to adapt during construction was vital to progressing the project and keeping the community engaged in sport and recreation.
“The oval gets so much use, not just from the cricket and football clubs, but also from the community who use it informally throughout the week,” Cr Grist commented. “Once this reconstruction is complete, the oval will provide a high-quality, all-weather surface that benefits the whole community for years to come.”
What This Means for Local Sports and Recreation
Upon completion, Spring Creek Reserve’s upgraded oval will support more reliable play across seasons, reducing cancellations caused by poor field conditions. The improved drainage and turf system will not only enhance performance for cricket and football clubs but will also encourage broader community participation, from junior leagues to casual weekend games. This aligns with the council’s broader aim of investing in resilient community facilities that promote health, sport, and social connection across the Surf Coast.
The project’s timeline indicates turf-related work will be completed by December, with surrounding infrastructure and amenities finished in early next year. Residents can anticipate a period of disruption during construction, but the long-term benefits—a durable, all-weather surface and safer surroundings—are expected to deliver value for many seasons to come.
Looking Ahead
As the works commence, the community is encouraged to stay informed through council updates and local notices. The completed oval at Spring Creek Reserve will not only enhance sporting opportunities but will also serve as a welcoming, well-maintained space for families and visitors exploring the reserve.
