CPU’s CBA Shines in ASEAN Future Sustainable Leaders 2025 National Competition

CPU’s Bold Leap in Sustainability Education

Central Philippine University (CPU) continues to position itself at the forefront of sustainability-driven innovation. A standout achievement came from a student team from CPU’s College of Business and Accountancy (CBA), which secured multiple top recognitions at the ASEAN Future Sustainable Leaders (AFSL) 2025 Philippine National Competition. This event, held in partnership with KPMG Philippines, RG Manabat & Co., CPAs, and the PICPA Committee on Faculty Development and Research, spotlights student-led solutions aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Top Honors for “Catch to Cost”

Among 47 nationwide video submissions, CPU’s entry “Catch to Cost: NASFA’s Story of Adaptability and Sustainability” captured three major recognitions: Top 18 Video Entry, 2nd Best Video, and 1st Runner-Up in the national eliminations. The win not only validates CPU’s commitment to practical, community-focused innovation but also advances the team to the ASEAN-level competition scheduled for November 7, 2025, at Universitas Terbuka in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The Team and Leadership

The award-winning team comprises BS Accountancy third-year students Prince Joshua G. Ferrer, Ernie D. Lagud, Jicel Kate A. Marañon, and Eillene D. Pador. They were guided by coach Prof. Charis Emmelynn M. Bautista from the Department of Accountancy. Under steady mentorship, the team translated NASFA’s sustainable practices in the fisheries sector into a compelling narrative about adaptability and community-based innovation.

What the Video Showed

“Catch to Cost” spotlights the Nasidman Small Fisherfolk Association (NASFA) and its sustainable practices, emphasizing responsible consumption, climate action, and sustainable livelihoods. The entry demonstrates how small fishers can adapt to changing environmental and economic conditions while aligning with SDGs—especially those related to climate action and poverty reduction—through innovative, community-driven solutions.

Other CPU Teams in the Spotlight

CPU also had strong showings with two additional entries. “Rainwater: A Gift of Nature Wielded for a Sustainable Future,” featured students Jayson V. Arquisola, Adrian Carl F. Esmenos, Rose Marie L. Posadas, and Kimara T. Yap. Another entry, “BrewCycle: Enhancing Sustainability in Already-Sustainable Specialty Coffee,” included Rheyzzel Mae L. Demoral, Maricris R. Maglalang, Joelyza J. Olarte, and Stefanie Alyssa A. Parcon. Both projects were coached by Prof. Charis Emmelynn M. Bautista.

The AFSL Platform and Its Impact

The ASEAN Future Sustainable Leaders competition is a yearly online case challenge that unites secondary and tertiary students from ASEAN member countries. Participants craft multidisciplinary, innovative solutions that support the SDGs. This year’s theme—“Empowering ASEAN Youth for a Sustainable Future: Innovation, Collaboration, and Community in Action”—highlights the close ties between climate action, education, equality, and economic growth across the region.

<h3 National and Regional Stages

In the Philippines, finalists were chosen from 47 video entries. The competition involved online viewer engagement, with the Top 18 advancing to panel interviews on October 4, 2025. Finalists were evaluated on originality, feasibility, and depth of understanding of the issues presented. Two national grand winners will represent the Philippines in the ASEAN Final Round in Indonesia, with cash prizes, pocket money, medals, and certificates as part of their awards.

<h2 CPU’s Commitment to Sustainable Leadership

CPU’s strong performance in AFSL underscores the university’s dedication to academic excellence and sustainability-centered education. By empowering students to lead innovative, real-world projects, CPU demonstrates how future business leaders can drive positive environmental and social impact on a regional scale.
