New surface, new possibilities at Old Market Square
The city has swapped the grassy area in front of the Cube stage at Old Market Square for a durable artificial turf surface. Officials say the change will make the space more versatile and easier to maintain, while preserving its iconic role as a gathering place for residents and visitors alike.
Why switch to artificial turf?
Coun. Vivian Santos explained that the original grass could not withstand the repeated, heavy use from the dozens of events hosted in the square each year. In addition to wear and tear, maintenance costs for the grassy area proved high. The new turf addresses both challenges by offering a hard-wearing surface that remains welcoming throughout the season, from festival weekends to casual strolls on weekdays.
Durability and cost savings
Installed as part of a broader parks and recreation effort, the project cost $100,000 funded through the 2023 parks and recreation enhancement program. The upgrade includes 315 square metres of artificial turf along with improved drainage to prevent puddling and protect the surface during wet weather. City officials say the turf reduces ongoing upkeep while extending the usable life of the square for a wide range of activities.
What events and activities are supported?
Old Market Square is a hub of activity in Winnipeg and hosts a spectrum of events that bring thousands of people to the area each season. Among the highlights are the city’s fringe and jazz festivals, which rely on flexible public spaces that can accommodate large crowds. In winter, the same area converts into a public skating rink, a seasonal staple that draws families and neighbors to the heart of the city.
Community impact and next steps
Officials emphasize that the artificial turf creates a more inviting and accessible space for residents and visitors, from morning markets to evening performances. The improved drainage helps ensure events aren’t hindered by weather-related issues, and the surface is designed to withstand the city’s diverse uses without frequent resurfacing. While the turf is a practical upgrade, it also aligns with broader goals to keep Old Market Square vibrant, safe, and adaptable to future programming.
Looking ahead
As Old Market Square continues to host a mix of cultural festivals, skating, and everyday civic life, the artificial turf is positioned as a foundational improvement to support ongoing community engagement. City planners and event organizers will be watching usage patterns and maintenance costs to gauge additional enhancements that could further elevate the space while preserving its historic charm.
