Manila Medical Mission for Seniors During Elderly Filipino Week

Manila hosts medical and dental mission for seniors during Elderly Filipino Week

The city government of Manila, through the Manila Health Department (MHD) and the Office for Senior Citizens’ Affairs (OSCA), conducted a focused medical and dental mission for senior citizens in observance of Elderly Filipino Week (EFW) on Tuesday, October 7. The event is part of Manila’s ongoing commitment to improving senior health outcomes and fostering active, dignified aging in the nation’s capital.

Accessible care for seniors on a dedicated day

The mission took place at the Don Bosco Covered Court in Tondo, a venue chosen to bring healthcare services closer to older residents. Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso joined city officials and frontline workers to oversee the program, underscoring the administration’s stance that senior welfare remains a top priority. In his remarks, the mayor highlighted that “everyday is Elderly Filipino Week in Manila,” a sentiment that resonates with the city’s sustained investments in elder care, health resources, and community support.

What the initiative offered

Among the key provisions of the medical mission were the distribution of 20 wheelchairs to selected beneficiaries, ensuring greater mobility and independence for several senior residents. The event also provided free meals, basic X-ray services, and laboratory tests, enabling early detection and treatment for common age-related health issues. These services were complemented by social care offerings, such as free Ensure milk, birthday cakes, and social pension information, all aimed at enhancing the quality of life for Manila’s seniors.

Strengthening local health access

Domagoso emphasized that the city’s health infrastructure is being strengthened to ensure easy walk-in access to medical care. “They no longer need to book for an appointment with their doctors online because a doctor or medical professional will always be present at the health centers,” the mayor noted, describing a health system designed to reduce barriers to timely care. The authorities also reassured residents that health centers are stocked with medicines and necessary medical supplies to support community needs without delay.

EFW: A nationwide reminder of senior contributions

The Elderly Filipino Week (EFW) is celebrated annually under Proclamation No. 470, signed by former President Fidel Ramos on September 26, 1994. The observance honors the invaluable contributions of Filipino senior citizens, advocates for stronger intergenerational relationships, and promotes inclusive, age-friendly programs that enable older adults to participate actively in society. Manila’s recent mission reflects these goals by integrating health, social support, and mobility assistance into a single community-focused event.

Looking ahead: sustained programs for aging well

City officials say the mission is just one part of a broader strategy to age well in Manila. Beyond episodic health events, the MHD and OSCA are continuously working to improve health centers, expand accessible services, and promote preventive care tailored to seniors. By combining medical services, nutrition support, social engagement, and mobility aids, Manila aims to build a more age-friendly city where older residents can live healthier, more independent lives.
