DepEd Leads National Teachers’ Day 2025 Celebration with Strong Welfare Push for Filipino Educators

National Teachers’ Day 2025: A Night of Honor and Policy Push

On October 6, 2025, the Department of Education (DepEd) marked a pivotal National Teachers’ Day (NTD) celebration, underscoring a robust package of welfare improvements and a sustained commitment to teachers’ professional growth. The event, held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City and attended by around 12,500 teachers across Luzon, doubled as the culminating activity for World Teachers’ Day (WTD) and National Teachers’ Month (NTM) under the banner “Together 4 Teachers.”

The celebration honored the nation’s educators for their unwavering dedication, highlighting how teachers shape minds, values, and, ultimately, a nation that Filipinos can be proud of—one student at a time.

Leaders’ Message: Commitment to Teaching Welfare

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara led the event, delivering speeches that connected classroom realities to national development. President Marcos emphasized that teachers’ work extends beyond imparting knowledge; it also nurtures patience, courage, and hope. He reiterated the government’s ongoing efforts to improve teachers’ benefits and welfare, noting the universal reach of education—from urban centers to remote barrios.

Secretary Angara stressed the essential role of teachers in learning continuity, especially during crises. He linked recovery efforts to robust teacher support, highlighting a series of DepEd initiatives designed to elevate education quality and working conditions.

Key DepEd Initiatives to Elevate Teachers’ Welfare

DepEd outlined several major programs and reforms intended to directly benefit educators and school staff. A centerpiece is the annual medical allowance of P7,000 for teachers and personnel, intended to cover health maintenance organization (HMO) and medical needs. The department targets roughly 1.2 million beneficiaries, with most already receiving the benefit as of the latest reporting period.

Another cornerstone is the Expanded Career Progression System, which accelerates promotions for teachers. The system provides two tracks: a Teaching Track (up to Teacher VII and Master Teacher V) and an Administrative Track (up to School Principal IV). This structure aims to ensure career growth and prevent stagnation in the lowest ranks.

Administrative duties are also being streamlined. DepEd reported a 57 percent reduction in administrative tasks, with only five essential school forms now required. The reduction is designed to free teachers to focus more on instruction and student engagement.

From a welfare lens, vacation service credits were expanded to 30 days, doubling the previous allotment. The extension supports teachers’ personal and health needs while reducing burnout and improving job satisfaction.

Long-Term Plans: Education Quality, digitalization, and Classrooms

The Teacher Education Roadmap 2025–2035, led by the Teacher Education Council (TEC), outlines a decade-long strategy to align teacher preparation with the Quality Basic Education Development Plan (QBEDP) 2025–2035. This roadmap seeks to foster innovative curricula and stronger links between teacher preparation and classroom realities.

To address classroom congestion, the government plans to add 60,000 teaching positions by fiscal year 2026, supported by a ₱114.39 billion allocation for salaries and benefits—a 19.4 percent year-over-year increase. In parallel, a P16 billion FY 2026 budget program targets digitalization: 240,000 new laptops, expanded connectivity, and enhanced internet support for teachers.

Measuring Impact: Recognition Meets Real Change

Beyond ceremonial tribute, the NTDP 2025 celebration emphasizes tangible improvements in teachers’ daily work life and the long tail of educational outcomes. The Department notes that the 2023 Performance-Based Bonus (PBB) for eligible staff has been approved, and the Special Allotment Release Orders (SARO) are set to unlock additional funding by year-end. These financial and administrative steps are intended to help teachers concentrate on pedagogy rather than red tape.

By centering the needs of educators, DepEd aims to revitalize respect for the teaching profession and ensure that public investment translates into better learning outcomes. The National Teachers’ Day is thus framed not only as an annual rite of gratitude but as a strategic moment to reimagine teaching as a vital, rewarding vocation essential to nation-building.

National Context and Global Alignment

National Teachers’ Day in the Philippines runs alongside UNESCO-aligned World Teachers’ Day observances and forms part of National Teachers’ Month, observed from September 5 to October 5. The 2025 celebration reiterates a shared global belief: empowered teachers are foundational to resilient learning systems and inclusive growth.
