Family Space Day in Dundalk: Planetarium Shows & Talks

A Local Celebration of World Space Week 2025

Families in Dundalk are invited to a day of discovery and wonder on Saturday, 11 October, as the town hosts Family Space Day. The event runs from 11am to 5pm and features a mix of planetarium experiences, live talks, interactive workshops, and space-inspired activities designed for all ages. Organised by Dr. Niamh Shaw as part of her community science programme Town Scientist, the day is funded by Research Ireland’s Discover Programme and aims to bring science closer to home for families across Louth and beyond.

Key Activities and Where to Find Them

The programme brings together a range of engaging experiences across two local venues: Louth County Library and the Dundalk Credit Union Community Building. Highlights include:

  • Armagh Planetarium Dome Shows — A portable planetarium dome from Armagh Observatory and Planetarium will deliver immersive night-sky experiences with shows every 30 minutes from 11am to 5pm at the Dundalk Credit Union Community Building. It’s a chance to explore constellations, planets, and cosmic phenomena in a comfortable, indoors setting.
  • Engineering for Life in Space — At 11am in Dundalk Library, former NASA engineer David Bushman will discuss the engineering behind life-support systems and how astronauts sleep, cook, and live in space. His insights shed light on the practical challenges of sustaining human life beyond Earth.
  • Living in the Arctic… Thinking About Space — At 3pm in Dundalk Library, Town Scientist Dr. Niamh Shaw will share stories from her Arctic expedition. The talk will connect polar exploration with space exploration, illustrating how extreme environments inform design for life on the Moon or Mars. There will be personal stories, video footage, and a Q&A session.
  • DIY Space Accessories Workshop — From 12pm to 3pm at the Dundalk Credit Union Community Building, families can craft their own space-themed accessory. Led by Town Scientist alumni Eva Ponomoraw, the hands-on workshop is suitable for children aged 8 and up; a parent or guardian must accompany each child.
