Overview of the project
Secunderabad is set to host what officials describe as the country’s largest steel bridge. The Telangana government has green-lighted the construction as part of an 18.170-kilometer elevated corridor that will connect key legs of the city’s road network. The corridor will run from Rajiv Rahadari to Parade Ground and onwards toward Shamirpet, with the steel bridge component spanning approximately 11.65 kilometers of the route.
To accelerate the project, the government has authorized the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) to invite tenders under the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) model. Officials say the steel bridge is designed to combine speed of construction with durability, ensuring long‑term resilience to traffic loads and weather conditions.
Route and scale
The elevated corridor length of 18.170 km covers significant stretches around Secunderabad and adjacent urban zones. Of this, a major portion—about 11.65 km—will be a steel bridge, making it the longest steel structure of its kind in the country. The corridor’s alignment departs from Rajiv Rahadari, passes through Parade Ground, and reaches Shamirpet as part of a broader effort to streamline cross-city movement and reduce bottlenecks that have long plagued traffic streams into and out of the city.
Underground and expansion plans
As part of the wider design, the project includes a 450-meter underground tunnel near Hakimpet Airport, expected to improve connectivity without encroaching on surface traffic. After the tunnel, the plan envisions expanding the remaining road corridor to six lanes, addressing future traffic growth and promoting smoother travel across the corridor.
Budget and procurement
The state government estimates a total outlay of around Rs 2,232 crore for the elevated corridor and steel bridge project. HMDA has signaled that tenders will be called through its EPC procurement process, enabling an integrated approach to design, construction, and delivery. This method is intended to fast-track development while maintaining high standards of safety and structural integrity.
Why this matters for Hyderabad and beyond
Telangana’s ruling party has prioritized urban development and traffic decongestion as part of its city-improvement agenda. By delivering a landmark steel bridge within an elevated corridor, the government aims to reduce congestion on major routes, shorten commute times, and improve freight movement through Secunderabad and surrounding areas. The project also signals confidence in local engineering capabilities and the potential to spur related investments in infrastructure around Hyderabad.
What to expect next
With government approval in place, HMDA is expected to publish EPC tenders shortly. The procurement process will invite bids from qualified construction and engineering firms, who will be expected to offer integrated solutions for foundations, steel bridge superstructure, tunnel work, and ancillary road widening. Once selected, the project timeline and milestones will be announced, giving residents a clearer sense of when sections may begin to come online and how traffic management will be handled during construction.
Impact on residents and business
In addition to easing daily commutes, the elevated corridor and steel bridge could unlock smoother longer-distance travel for northern Telangana, improving access to Hyderabad’s airport and business districts. Local businesses may benefit from improved logistics, while residents could enjoy more predictable travel times and fewer delays on critical routes.
