Overview
The fourth MACA Cancer 200 – Ride for Research arrives in Western Australia on Saturday, October 4, inviting thousands to push their limits for a cause that affects nearly every family. With an estimated two in five Australians diagnosed with cancer by age 85, every kilometre traveled helps turn hope into life-saving research at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research.
The Challenge and Route
Riders will tackle a demanding 200-kilometre journey over two days, starting at McCullum Park in South Perth, weaving to Hall Park in Mandurah, and returning to Optus Stadium. Around 2,000 riders are expected to join the ride, turning the road into a moving fund-raiser and community celebration. More than 90% of participants have been touched by cancer—through family, friends, or colleagues—making the event a deeply personal mission. Among them are 78 riders who are cancer survivors, proudly carrying yellow flags on their bikes to signal resilience and hope.
Why It Matters
As the Perkins CEO, Professor Peter Leedman AO, explains, the MACA Cancer 200 is more than a ride; it is a powerful act of generosity and a practical investment in science. Funds raised power the next breakthroughs in WA alongside researchers who are racing to translate ideas into tomorrow’s treatments. “Each discovery begins with a bold idea – but research needs resources, technology and time,” he says, underscoring how community support accelerates progress and keeps families together longer.
Impact, Partnerships and Volunteers
The event unites corporate WA with the wider community. MACA, Mineral Resources, WesTrac and WA Limestone provide equipment and logistics to reduce costs and maximise funds directed to research. Close to 400 volunteers contribute across the ride, coordinating safety, registration, course support, and spectator services. Since its inception, West Australians have raised more than 74 million dollars for cancer research at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, a testament to the state’s enduring commitment to science-driven healthcare.
Where the Funds Go
Money raised from the Ride for Perkins supports cancer research, drug development and clinical trials in WA. The goal is clear: speed up discoveries that could lead to lifesaving treatments and make cancer less lethal, helping families stay connected for longer. The event is a concrete example of how donations translate into real-world scientific progress and patient benefits.
Join the Movement
The ride is open to participants from all backgrounds, united by one purpose: to advance cancer research in Western Australia. Whether riding, donating, or cheering on the day, supporters contribute to a cause with tangible impact. The ceremony begins at 6:30am on Saturday, October 4, with riders and volunteers gathering to kick off the journey and celebrate the community’s commitment to change.
