Centre for Integrated Health and Wellbeing: A new hub for health research
The University of Portsmouth has officially launched its Centre for Integrated Health and Wellbeing (CiH-Well), a cross-disciplinary research hub focused on solving complex health challenges that span from childhood through to older age. The centre unites psychology, sports and exercise science, social care, healthcare, and digital technologies to address health and wellbeing in real-world settings.
CiH-Well is committed to reducing health inequalities and ensuring fair access to good health regardless of background or where people live. By combining cutting-edge research with practical applications, the centre will work to improve health outcomes for individuals and communities at local, national, and global levels.
Mission, people, and partnerships
At its core, CiH-Well aims to translate insight from diverse disciplines into accessible, impactful solutions for chronic illnesses, mental health disorders, and preventable diseases. This multidisciplinary approach reflects the university’s dedication to world-class, integrated health and wellbeing research that makes a real difference in people’s lives. Executive Dean Professor Richard Thelwell emphasised this commitment, noting that the centre “positions Portsmouth at the forefront of integrated health and wellbeing research” with substantial funding already secured.
The centre also prioritises the development of the next generation of health researchers. It supports early-career researchers and fosters new collaborations through extensive Public and Patient Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) networks, ensuring research is shaped by those it aims to help.
Funding, impact, and track record
CiH-Well builds on a strong track record of research success. Members have generated more than £5.4 million in research funding over the past five years from UK research councils, Innovate UK, the European Union, charitable foundations, and industry partners. This robust funding pipeline underpins ambitious projects and helps the centre attract international collaborators and high-calibre talent.
Located within the Faculty of Science and Health, CiH-Well serves as a global hub for innovative health and wellbeing research. Its establishment complements other flagship initiatives at Portsmouth, including the UK’s first branch medical degree in partnership with King’s College London, designed to address GP shortages in Portsmouth and surrounding areas. The Faculty’s Institute of Life Sciences and Healthcare has also been strengthened to deepen ties with NHS trusts and regional partners across the South East.
From launch to collaboration: events and expectations
The CiH-Well launch took place on Monday (29 September) with presentations from University researchers and external speakers, facility tours, laboratory demonstrations, and networking opportunities. The event was organised by the Faculty of Science and Health with support from the NIHR Wessex Experimental Medicine Network, part of the NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre (BRC).
Professor Mike Grocott, Director of NIHR Southampton BRC, described the day as a catalyst for new connections and collaborations. “The launch day has created a real buzz as strengths are highlighted and new teams form,” he said. “This will enable greater outcomes than working in isolation, particularly in addressing health inequalities within the Wessex region.”
Looking ahead: impact for Portsmouth and beyond
CiH-Well aims to serve as an international hub for integrated health and wellbeing research, delivering practical solutions that improve everyday health for people across all ages. By harnessing diverse expertise and strengthening partnerships with NHS trusts and regional organisations, the centre is well-positioned to influence policy, clinical practice, and community health initiatives well beyond its Portsmouth home.
