Windows 10 Update Support Extended by a Year

Microsoft Extends Windows 10 Update Support

In a recent announcement, Microsoft revealed that it will extend security updates for Windows 10 by an additional year. Users in Europe and the United States can now benefit from free updates until October 13, 2026. This decision pushes back the originally scheduled end of support date, which was set for October 14, 2025.

This extension aims to facilitate the transition for users who are unable or unwilling to upgrade to Windows 11. With many individuals still relying on Windows 10 for their everyday computing needs, this move is seen as a lifeline during a pivotal time of software migration.

Environmental Concerns Around Major Software Updates

However, the extension has not come without criticism. The German Environmental Aid Organization (Deutsche Umwelthilfe, DUH) has voiced significant concerns regarding the potential increase in electronic waste resulting from unsupported systems. According to the DUH, over 40% of computers globally are unable to upgrade to Windows 11. Once the support ends, these devices risk becoming obsolete, potentially generating an estimated 700 million kilograms of additional e-waste.

Calls for Fundamental Change in Software Support

Barbara Metz, the federal managing director of DUH, emphasized that simply extending support for one year is not enough to mitigate the looming crisis. The organization is advocating for legislative measures that would require manufacturers and software developers to provide long-term update periods for their products. Specifically, the DUH is calling for operating systems to receive at least 15 years of free security updates. This policy would not only apply to computers but also to all software-dependent electronic devices.

Microsoft’s Response to Environmental Concerns

While Microsoft has made strides in extending the support for Windows 10, the company has yet to address these environmental concerns comprehensively. Critics argue that merely delaying the inevitable does not solve the underlying problems associated with digital obsolescence. The emphasis must shift towards sustainable practices, ensuring that users have the tools they need without contributing to environmental degradation.
