No Thomasians Arrested During Protests: UST and Manila Police Confirm

No Arrests of Thomasians During Recent Protests

On Sunday, the Manila Police District (MPD) and student organizations from the University of Santo Tomas (UST) dispelled rumors circulating on social media about Thomasians being arrested during recent anti-corruption protests, coinciding with the anniversary of martial law.

Clarification from Authorities

MPD spokesperson Police Major Philip Ines addressed the circulating claims, stating, “Negative po yan,” confirming that no arrests of Thomasians occurred. The false information claimed that several students were “zip tied and chucked in vans” by authorities while participating in the protests at EDSA. This led to a heightened sense of alarm among students and alumni of UST.

Student Groups Respond

Anakbayan–UST, a prominent student organization, also took to Facebook to clarify the situation. They emphasized that no Thomasian was harmed during the rallies, citing eyewitness accounts that confirmed the safety of UST students who attended the protests at Luneta and EDSA. The organization urged the public to avoid disseminating unverified reports and to rely on credible sources for accurate information.

Safety Advisory from UST Central Student Council

In light of the protests and the misinformation spreading online, the UST Central Student Council (CSC) issued an emergency advisory recommending that all Thomasians—students, alumni, and staff—stay indoors for their safety. The council’s advisory noted, The council strongly advises all Thomasian students, alumni, and University staff to stay indoors at the comfort of your homes for the time being. This precautionary measure is in response to the unrest that occurred during the protests.

Minors and Curfew Regulations

Additionally, the CSC reminded the Thomasian community—especially minors—of the curfew regulations set by the Manila City Mayor’s Office, which restricts movement from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. This is to ensure the safety of all, particularly during times of unrest.

Context of the Protests

The protests in question were aimed at addressing corruption and calling for accountability in governance. While the demonstrations attracted significant participation, the police reported that at least 72 individuals were arrested for allegedly causing disturbances during the events. It’s crucial for the public to understand that not all participants were involved in unruly behavior, and misinformation can create unnecessary panic.

Final Thoughts

As the situation develops, it’s imperative for the community to stay informed through reliable channels. False reports can lead to unwarranted fear and unrest among students and citizens alike. The UST community is encouraged to remain conscious of the information they consume and share, prioritizing trusted sources.
