Africa CDC Strengthens Mpox Response with Bavarian Nordic Vaccines

Continued Partnership Accelerates Africa’s Mpox Response

Africa CDC has received a further boost in its mpox response with an additional donation of 110,000 doses of the MVA-BN mpox vaccine from Bavarian Nordic. The vaccines are allocated to Uganda, one of the countries hardest hit in 2025, through the Mpox Access and Allocation Mechanism (AAM) coordinated by Africa CDC in partnership with global health actors. This latest contribution strengthens vaccine availability on the ground and enhances Africa’s capacity to respond swiftly and equitably to ongoing mpox outbreaks.

Allocation Through the Mpox Access and Allocation Mechanism

The Mpox Access and Allocation Mechanism (AAM) is central to how Africa CDC ensures fair and timely distribution of vaccines and other countermeasures across member states. By aligning with Uganda’s epidemiological needs, the AAM helps to close gaps in supply, supporting an outbreak response that protects the most vulnerable populations and supports health systems under pressure. This mechanism is a key component of Africa’s broader public health strategy aimed at preparedness, self-reliance, and resilience against current and emerging threats.

Impact on Uganda’s Outbreak Response

Uganda has faced sustained mpox transmission in 2025, making increased vaccine access crucial for interrupting transmission chains and reducing the burden on health facilities. The additional 110,000 doses add to the continent’s arsenal, enabling targeted vaccination campaigns, rapid response teams, and enhanced ring vaccination where appropriate. H.E. Dr. Jean Kaseya, Director-General of Africa CDC, emphasized that this donation complements ongoing surveillance, case management, and community outreach efforts, reinforcing the continent’s ability to protect communities with timely tools.

Global Collaboration and Sustainable Commitments

“Africa CDC welcomes this continued partnership with Bavarian Nordic in responding to the ongoing mpox outbreak,” said Dr. Kaseya. “This donation strengthens Uganda’s response and supports our shared goal of equitable access to life-saving tools across Africa.” Bavarian Nordic has now committed a total of 165,000 doses to Africa, underscoring a sustained commitment to public health resilience. Previous donations supported outbreak response through collaborations with the European Commission’s Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) and Gavi-eligible countries, illustrating a coordinated, multi-stakeholder approach to threat reduction.

Leadership and Accountability

Paul Chaplin, President and CEO of Bavarian Nordic, highlighted the ongoing health emergency represented by mpox in Africa and reaffirmed the company’s dedication to funding and vaccine availability. The donations are part of a broader effort to maintain steady supply lines and enable rapid deployment where they are most needed, reinforcing Africa’s public health infrastructure and response capacity.

Continuing the New Public Health Order for Africa

Through the Mpox AAM, Africa CDC coordinates equitable distribution of vaccines and other critical medical countermeasures to affected member states. This approach aligns with the New Public Health Order for Africa, an initiative aimed at ensuring the continent remains prepared, self-reliant, and resilient against current and future health threats. The ongoing collaboration with Bavarian Nordic and other partners is a cornerstone of this strategy, helping to protect lives and strengthen regional health systems.
