Police Raid Dismantles Illegal Firecracker Workshop in Bulacan
In a rapid police operation that underscores ongoing efforts to curb the illegal firecracker trade, authorities raided an unlicensed firecracker production facility in Sitio Bihunan, Barangay Biñang 1st, Bocaue, Bulacan, on Monday, Oct. 27. The raid led to the arrest of a 22-year-old man identified by authorities as “Jon-jon,” a resident of Bocaue, who was caught in the act of producing baby rockets without the proper permit.
The suspect was found manufacturing fireworks without authorization from the PNP Firearms and Explosives Office, a violation that triggers serious penalties under Philippine law. Law enforcement recovered 23 kilograms of potassium chlorate, a cylinder component used in rocket manufacture, and an undetermined amount of finished products. The quantity and materials suggest the facility was more than a makeshift workshop, signaling a deliberate operation rather than a casual, isolated act.
The operation reportedly followed a tip from a concerned citizen who alerted authorities to suspicious activity in the neighborhood. Acting on the information, the Bocaue Police, led by Captain Ferdie Santos and Patrolman Adrian Balagtas, assembled a response team and conducted a targeted search of the area. The quick mobilization reflects the local police force’s commitment to enforcing the Firecracker Law and protecting public safety during celebrations and festive periods when fireworks demand surges.
Republic Act 7183, commonly known as the Firecrackers Law, regulates the manufacture, possession, and sale of fireworks in the Philippines. Under the law, unlicensed production and distribution can pose significant risks, including accidental explosions, injuries, and fires, particularly in densely populated communities. The Bocaue raid serves as a stark reminder that authorities remain vigilant against illegal production and distribution networks that could undermine public safety and the government’s regulatory framework.
Officials emphasized that the case remains under investigation, and more details will be released as the police review the seized materials and interview witnesses and the suspect. The arrest is being described as part of a broader, ongoing campaign against illegal firecracker activity, with law enforcement agencies coordinating with local governments to ensure that sellers and producers operate within legal boundaries.
Public safety reminders accompanied the authorities’ actions. Police urged residents to follow established rules when handling and selling fireworks. Safe practices include purchasing only from licensed vendors, using fireworks in open spaces away from structures, keeping water or a fire extinguisher nearby, and supervising children around any pyrotechnic devices. In addition, communities are encouraged to report suspicious activity to prevent similar operations from taking root and to avoid avoidable injuries during peak celebratory periods.
The incident is a snapshot of a broader national concern about illegal explosive manufacturing. While many residents enjoy the excitement and tradition associated with fireworks, officials stress that safety and compliance must come first. By continuing to target illegal facilities and reinforce regulatory measures, the police aim to reduce accidents while preserving the cultural and festive spirit that fireworks symbolize for many communities across the country.
As the case unfolds, investigators will determine the extent of the operation, any connections to larger distribution networks, and potential charges that could be brought against the suspect. The public can expect updates as more information becomes available from the Bocaue Police and related agencies.
