Two Filipino OFWs Found Safe in Hong Kong, DMW Reports

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) announced on Friday that two overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who had been reported missing in Hong Kong have been located and are safe. The revelation was made by DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac during an online press conference.

The Missing Workers’ Identity and Where They Were Found

The two women, 23-year-old Imee Pabuaya and 33-year-old Aleli Tibay, were found at 10:30 p.m. last Thursday. After being located, they were brought to the Sha Tin Police Station for initial processing and later transported to the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Hong Kong around midnight. They were provided psychosocial counseling by the social welfare attache along with support from the Philippine government’s team in Hong Kong.

What Happened and Next Steps

Cacdac explained that the pair were not still employed by their Hong Kong employers. They reportedly went missing while hiking along a country trail, a detail they will discuss with their former employers as part of determining the next steps. According to the secretary, the employers will be informed of what transpired, and since the pair’s services have been terminated, arrangements to gather their belongings will be made.

For now, the focus is on ensuring the OFWs’ safety and facilitating their repatriation documentation if their employment status has indeed ended. Cacdac assured that the two workers are in good condition and receiving continued care at the MWO in Hong Kong while their case is resolved.

Repatriation and Welfare Support

The DMW is prepared to handle the necessary repatriation processes for the two workers, should their contracts be terminated. This includes coordinating travel arrangements, ensuring proper documentation, and providing consular and welfare support. The agency emphasized its ongoing commitment to safeguarding OFWs, particularly those who go missing or experience sudden employment changes abroad.

Context and Implications for OFWs

Missing person cases among OFWs have drawn attention to the importance of robust welfare services and accessible support networks for migrant workers and their families. The DMW’s quick response highlights the Philippines government’s continued emphasis on the safety and well-being of Filipino workers overseas.

What This Means for Families Back Home

Families of OFWs can expect timely updates from the DMW and the Philippine Consulate or MWO in Hong Kong. The agency’s involvement aims to reduce anxiety and provide a clear path toward repatriation if needed, alongside psychosocial and legal assistance to help workers adjust to post-missing status.

For now, Secretary Cacdac urged patience and cooperation from the workers’ families and employers as the next steps are determined. The main news is that Imee Pabuaya and Aleli Tibay are safe and under the care of the MWO while their cases are resolved.
