WMSC Rescheduled in Zamboanga City: Safety Takes Center Stage
The World Mathematics and Science Challenge (WMSC) in Zamboanga City has been moved from its original dates to December 15–18, 2024. The four-day international competition, organized by the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild Philippines (MTG), was postponed after a spate of earthquakes hit several regions in the Philippines, prompting concerns from participating nations about the safety of their students.
MTG head Dr. Simon Chua acknowledged the concerns, saying, “Concerns have been raised by parents from participating countries regarding the safety of their children taking part in the WMSC. Their concerns are absolutely correct.” The decision to reschedule aims to ensure a secure environment for all delegates while maintaining the event’s high standard of math and science excellence.
International Participation and Local Reassurances
Despite the shift in dates, the WMSC continues to attract international interest. As of now, nine nations have confirmed their involvement: China, India, Indonesia, Bulgaria, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Kazakhstan. MTG insiders indicate that more countries are expected to join the competition, underscoring the event’s growing global appeal in nurturing young talents in math and science.
Robert Degolacion, chair of the local organizing committee, stressed the importance of participant welfare. “We assure our foreign guests that the welfare and security of all participants are MTG’s utmost concern,” he stated. Degolacion also highlighted the city’s capacity to host safely, noting that Zamboanga City is not prone to earthquakes and that accommodations arranged for guests are reliable and secure.
Why the MTG Believes in This Global Platform
Dr. Chua explained that the WMSC was created to provide a platform for math and science-gifted students to explore diverse cultures, exchange innovative educational practices, and cultivate their talents through collaboration and competition. The competition strives to invigorate learning by making it more engaging and intellectually stimulating, thereby fostering a worldwide community of learners and educators dedicated to advancing math and science education.
What to Expect in December
The WMSC schedule has been adjusted to ensure all activities proceed smoothly under safe conditions. The individual and team contests, along with the Math and Science Camp, will take place on December 16. Delegates will also enjoy a sightseeing tour of Zamboanga City, a port town rich in history and characterized by a blend of Spanish, indigenous, and Islamic influences. The organizers emphasize that the city’s cultural hospitality will provide a memorable backdrop to the mathematical and scientific exchanges that define the event.
Educational Impact and Community Engagement
Beyond competition, the WMSC aims to broaden access to high-level STEM education. The event offers a unique opportunity for students, educators, and mentors to exchange ideas, showcase innovative problem-solving approaches, and learn from peers across continents. For the Philippines, hosting such a prominent international event also highlights the country’s commitment to science and mathematics education and its role in shaping the next generation of leaders in STEM.
As organizers finalize arrangements for December, MTG officials urge participants, families, and supporters to stay informed about travel requirements and safety guidelines. The postponement reflects a balanced approach—prioritizing safety while preserving the event’s mission to celebrate mathematical and scientific excellence on a global stage.
