The Kerry school unveils a vibrant environmental mural
A striking new mural now graces the assembly hall at Pobalscoil Kerry, aiming to inspire students and staff to take an active role in preserving the environment. The artwork is the result of months of dedication by a local artist, Roberta Enrico, whose brushwork brings to life a message of sustainability that resonates across the school community.
Collaboration rooted in sustainability and community
The mural is the product of a collaborative effort between Roberta Enrico and Faun Tammes Schütz, a local poet whose verses weave throughout the artwork. Commissioned by the school’s management and sustainability team, the project aligns with Education for Sustainable Development and the broader 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The aim was to create something unique that reflects the student body and the local context, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility toward the environment.
Voices behind the artwork
“We wanted to highlight the efforts our school is making to fulfil its role in contributing towards a sustainable future through Education for Sustainable Development in a way that was unique to our students and our school community,” says Liam Young, Pobalscoil’s coordinator for sustainability. Roberta Enrico adds that this mural is a personal reflection on environmental issues inspired by the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. By incorporating elements of the local environment, the artwork seeks to create a meaningful connection with the community.
A deeper purpose beyond paint
Roberta explains that the mural’s purpose extends beyond visual appeal. “Through this work, I aim to raise awareness and encourage sensitivity toward the challenges our planet faces. Beyond artistic expression, the mural’s deeper purpose is to inspire reflection on the vital role each of us plays in preserving the delicate balance of our environment.” The piece thus serves as both an educational tool and a source of daily inspiration for students and staff alike.
Support and setting enhancements
The project received partial sponsorship from Kenmare Tidy Towns, with funds designated for a sustainability initiative. To complement the mural, the school’s corridors and main assembly area have been refreshed with fresh paint, creating a cohesive and inviting atmosphere that enhances the new artwork’s impact. Principal Dermot Healy expressed pride in the finished result: “We are fortunate to have had Roberta, a talented artist, deliver such an inspirational masterpiece. The mural represents Pobalscoil’s commitment to sustainability.”
What the mural aims to achieve
Placed in the school’s main assembly area, the mural is highly visible and designed to spark ongoing conversations about environmental stewardship. By blending visual art with poetry and local context, it invites students, teachers, and visitors to reflect on practical steps toward a sustainable future, whether through classroom projects, recycling initiatives, or community engagement.
