WMSC Rescheduled for December Over Earthquake Concerns
The World Mathematics and Science Challenge (WMSC) in Zamboanga City has been moved from its original November schedule to December 15–18. The decision follows a spate of earthquakes that recently struck several provinces, prompting organizers to prioritize participant safety and peace of mind for the international competitors gathering for the four-day event.
Why the Change Was Necessary
MTG Phils. (Mathematics Trainers’ Guild Philippines), the group overseeing the competition, announced the shift in dates after discussions with parents and officials from participating countries. MTG head Dr. Simon Chua stated that concerns about student safety are valid and must be addressed before students travel for the event. “Their concerns are absolutely correct,” Chua affirmed.
International Participation and Security Assurances
Despite the postponement, nine nations have confirmed their involvement in the event so far, including China, India, Indonesia, Bulgaria, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Kazakhstan. Additional countries are anticipated to join as organizers finalize details and ensure a safe environment for all delegates.
Robert Degolacion, chair of the local organizing committee, reassured foreign guests that safety is MTG’s utmost concern. He emphasized the city’s capacity to host the event securely and noted that the Philippines’ geography — an archipelago with thousands of islands — does not imply uniform risk across the country. “If something happens in one area, it does not mean the whole country is affected,” he explained, pointing out that recent quakes hit provinces distant from Zamboanga City.
Facilities and Local Arrangements
MTG staff have pledged that accommodations in Zamboanga City are safe and reliable. The city, described as a stable host locale, will welcome participants without compromising their wellbeing. Organizers highlighted that the decision to shift dates allows for enhanced safety protocols and smoother event execution.
About the World Mathematics and Science Challenge
The WMSC aims to provide math and science‑gifted students with a platform to explore diverse cultures and share innovative educational practices. The four‑day international competition seeks to cultivate talent through collaborative and competitive experiences, invigorating learning and making it more engaging and intellectually stimulating. Dr. Chua underscored the long‑term goal: to foster a worldwide community of learners and educators dedicated to advancing math and science education.
Program and Activities
From December 16 onward, the WMSC will feature individual and team contests alongside Math and Science Camp activities. Delegates will also have the opportunity to enjoy a sightseeing tour of Zamboanga City, a port town rich in history where Spanish, indigenous, and Islamic influences converge. The city’s unique cultural blend provides a fitting backdrop for an event that celebrates cross‑cultural exchange and scholarly growth.
What This Means for Attendees
For participating students and their families, the rescheduled dates offer a safer, more predictable window to travel amidst a turbulent early year. Organizers encourage all attendees to stay abreast of updates and to coordinate travel plans with MTG’s local hosts as December approaches.
Looking Ahead
As the December dates approach, MTG hopes to finalize logistical details and expand participation. The event’s organizers remain committed to safeguarding participants while delivering an inspiring platform for math and science excellence on an international stage.
