Kerry School Unveils Inspiring Mural to Champion Environment and Sustainability

Bringing the 17 Goals to Life in a Local Space

A new mural now graces the assembly hall of a Kerry school, serving as a constant reminder of the importance of preserving the environment. The artwork, a collaborative effort between local artist Roberta Enrico and Faun Tammes Schütz, was born from a summer of hard work and thoughtful planning by the school’s management and sustainability team. Commissioned by Pobalscoil’s leadership, the piece seeks to make Education for Sustainable Development tangible and engaging for every student and staff member who passes beneath it.

A Collaboration Rooted in Community and Purpose

Roberta Enrico, the mural’s lead artist, described the commission as an opportunity to reflect the school’s ongoing sustainable initiatives in a way that resonates with its unique community. “This mural is the result of my reflections and personal interpretation of environmental issues inspired by the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda,” Roberta explained. “I have also incorporated elements from the local context to create a meaningful connection with the community.”

Faun Tammes Schütz, a local poet who contributed a guiding poem found throughout the mural, joined the process to weave language and imagery into a cohesive message. Faun noted that the work blends visual art with verse, inviting observers to slow down, reflect, and consider their own role in safeguarding the environment. The collaboration aims to spark a sense of shared responsibility and hope for future generations.

Education for Sustainable Development in Action

The mural sits in the heart of the school, where it is highly visible to students and staff alike. Its themes align with Education for Sustainable Development, highlighting environmental stewardship, community resilience, and the interconnectedness of global and local action. By presenting these ideas through vibrant imagery and accessible poetry, the project makes complex sustainability concepts approachable and personally relevant for young people and educators alike.

A Visible Commitment to a Sustainable Future

The project was sponsored in part by Kenmare Tidy Towns, whose support underscores the value of sustainability within the wider community. In addition to the mural, the school has refreshed the surrounding halls with a new paint job that complements the artwork, creating a cohesive and uplifting atmosphere that encourages daily reflection on environmental choices.

Principal Dermot Healy expressed pride in the finished work, noting that Roberta Enrico’s talent has delivered an inspirational masterpiece. “The mural represents Pobalscoil’s commitment to sustainability,” he said. “It is highly visible in the main assembly area and has brought a fresh look and energy to our school.”

Looking Ahead: Art, Poetry, and Community Engagement

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the mural is part of a broader effort to engage students in environmental topics through art and storytelling. The visual narrative, coupled with Faun’s poetry, invites ongoing dialogue about environmental issues and the small, everyday actions that contribute to a sustainable future. The artwork serves as a living classroom—one that evolves with student projects, school initiatives, and community conversations.
