Dr. Mehrara’s Vision for The PSF
In accepting the role, Dr. Mehrara emphasized a steadfast dedication to supporting residents, early-career researchers, and emerging innovators. “It’s an honor to lead The PSF, and I look forward to building on its legacy of excellence in plastic surgery research and innovation,” he stated. “I am deeply committed to the advancement of scientific discovery and supporting the work of residents, early-career researchers and emerging innovators.”
Throughout his presidency, he plans to champion new methods for strengthening and expanding The PSF’s mission of research and education. He will also prioritize initiatives that facilitate high-impact research, foster global partnerships, and broaden access to safe, effective, and affordable plastic surgery care for patients around the world.
Why The PSF Needs Strong Leadership Now
The PSF has long played a pivotal role in funding plastic surgery research and supporting international volunteer programs, visiting professor exchanges, and education initiatives. As the field evolves with advances in biology, materials science, and patient-centered care, leadership that can bridge basic research with clinical practice is critical. Dr. Mehrara’s experience—spanning bench science, clinical leadership, and educational outreach—positions him to drive strategic collaborations that amplify the Foundation’s impact.
A Look at The PSF and Its Mission
Founded in 1948, The Plastic Surgery Foundation supports research and international programs that improve the quality of life for patients undergoing plastic and reconstructive procedures. The Foundation funds a diverse portfolio of grants and collaborates with the ASPS to advance standards of care, train the next generation of surgeons, and expand global access to high-quality plastic surgery. The PSF’s efforts compliment ASPS’s role as a leading authority for board-certified plastic surgeons worldwide.
About ASPS and the Broader Context
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is the largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons, representing more than 11,000 physicians globally. Founded in 1931, ASPS serves as a trusted source of information on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery and provides ongoing professional development resources for its members. The new PSF leadership aligns with ASPS’s commitment to advancing science, education, and international collaboration in plastic surgery.
Looking Ahead
Dr. Mehrara’s presidency is anticipated to usher in a new phase of transformational research funding, interdisciplinary partnerships, and expanded access to innovative treatments. At a time when patient needs are increasingly complex, The PSF’s mission to support scientifically rigorous studies and international education remains essential to driving meaningful improvements in plastic and reconstructive care.
