New Leadership to Accelerate Research and Global Collaboration in Plastic Surgery
Babak J. Mehrara, MD, FACS, has been appointed president of The Plastic Surgery Foundation (The PSF), a pivotal organization that supports research and international activities of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). The announcement comes as The PSF reinforces its commitment to advancing scientific discovery, education, and access to high-quality plastic and reconstructive care around the world. Dr. Mehrara officially assumed the role on October 12, 2025, during Plastic Surgery The Meeting in New Orleans, and will serve through October 18, 2026.
A President Allegiant to Innovation, Education, and Patient Care
In expressing his enthusiasm for leading The PSF, Dr. Mehrara stated, “It’s an honor to lead The PSF, and I look forward to building on its legacy of excellence in plastic surgery research and innovation. I am deeply committed to the advancement of scientific discovery and supporting the work of residents, early-career researchers and emerging innovators. Throughout my presidency, I will champion new ways to strengthen and expand The Foundation’s mission of research and education.”
Dr. Mehrara is widely recognized for his leadership in oncologic reconstruction and his ability to blend clinical practice with rigorous scientific inquiry. His vision for The PSF centers on expanding high-impact research and forging strategic partnerships that broaden access to safe, effective, and affordable plastic surgery care globally. This approach aligns with The PSF’s long-standing aim to translate laboratory findings into tangible patient benefits.
A Distinguished Leader in Reconstructive Surgery
Dr. Mehrara’s professional responsibilities highlight a career devoted to advancing cancer care and reconstruction. He serves as Chief of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) and holds the Peter G. Cordeiro Endowed Chair in the Department of Surgery. His expertise extends to the surgical and nonsurgical management of cancer-related lymphedema, a condition that affects many cancer survivors. As a professor at Weill Cornell Medical College, Dr. Mehrara also educates the next generation of surgeons through a joint academic appointment.
At MSK, he leads the NIH-funded Lymphatic Biology Laboratory, directing cutting-edge research into lymphatic diseases and translating findings into clinically meaningful advances. With more than 400 peer-reviewed publications to his name, Dr. Mehrara has established himself as a leading voice in plastic and reconstructive surgery research, particularly in oncologic reconstruction and lymphatic science.
The PSF’s Evolving Mission under New Leadership
During his term, Dr. Mehrara will influence The PSF’s strategic direction by nurturing high-quality research and expanding collaborative networks with international partners. The Foundation supports a broad spectrum of grant programs, visiting professors, and international volunteer initiatives, all aimed at improving patient outcomes and expanding access to care. By prioritizing mentorship for residents and early-career researchers, The PSF aims to cultivate the next generation of innovators who will push the boundaries of plastic surgery science.
As part of its collaboration with ASPS, The PSF continues to play a crucial role in supporting researchers and clinicians who contribute to a global body of knowledge. Dr. Mehrara’s leadership is expected to strengthen these ties and foster new alliances that advance the field on multiple fronts, from basic science to clinical practice and policy development that supports patient-centered care.
About The PSF and ASPS
The Plastic Surgery Foundation (The PSF), founded in 1948, funds research, international volunteer programs, and visiting professor initiatives to improve patient quality of life through advances in plastic and reconstructive surgery. The PSF operates in concert with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the world’s largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons, representing more than 11,000 physicians globally.
ASPS, established in 1931, encompasses physicians certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, driving excellence in cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery through education, research, and advocacy.
Looking Ahead
With Dr. Mehrara at the helm, The PSF is positioned to amplify its impact by supporting transformative research, fostering international collaboration, and mentoring upcoming surgeons who will shape the future of plastic and reconstructive surgery. The plastic surgery community anticipates continued progress in cancer reconstruction, lymphedema treatment, and patient-centered innovation that improves lives around the world.
