Overview
The International Mars Exploration Working Group (IMEWG) invites interested researchers, engineers, and policy experts to apply for a newly forming sub-working group focused on planetary protection and international science priorities. This group will shape the strategy and scope for future robotic and crewed Mars exploration during the transition period leading up to 2026 and beyond.
Purpose and Structure
The sub-working group will operate through regular virtual meetings over roughly one year, with an in-person meeting at its midpoint in March/April 2026. The aim is to identify shared international goals, ensure responsible planetary protection practices, and align on science priorities that will guide future missions and collaborations.
What you will do
Participants will contribute to setting priorities, clarifying the scope of planetary protection activities, and proposing mechanisms for international cooperation. The group will address issues such as contamination prevention, forward and backward contamination, data sharing, and policy harmonization across space agencies and research institutions.
Who Should Apply
The opportunity is open to scientists, engineers, risk analysts, policy experts, and educators with experience in planetary protection, astrobiology, mission design, or related fields. Individuals with a track record of international collaboration or working group leadership are particularly encouraged to apply.
Requirements and Submission
Applicants should prepare:
- Motivation Letter (no longer than one page): your motivation to participate, the value you bring, and your relevant expertise. Indicate the science or planetary protection team you would align with.
- CV (no longer than two pages): current and recent roles (last five years), leadership or contributions to relevant teams, and up to five publications that best illustrate your suitability.
Submit your motivation letter and CV by October 20, 2025, to the email address provided by the IMEWG organizers. Shortlisted candidates may be contacted for further information or interviews.
Timeline
• Application deadline: October 20, 2025
• Virtual meetings: ongoing through approximately September 2026
• Midpoint in-person meeting: March/April 2026
Leadership and Contacts
The announcement references Gerhard Kminek (ESA) and Lindsay Hays (NASA) as key figures within the broader planetary exploration community. While these individuals are not directly responsible for the selection, they symbolize the international leadership behind IMEWG’s initiative.
If you are interested in contributing to this important international effort, prepare your motivation letter and CV and apply by the stated deadline.
Why Join?
Joining the IMEWG sub-working group offers a chance to influence Mars exploration policy and science direction, collaborate with a diverse international community, and help establish harmonized planetary protection standards that will support safe and sustainable missions to Mars.
