Google launches age assurance in Singapore to boost online safety for kids and teens

Google introduces age assurance in Singapore

Google has announced a landmark step to strengthen online safety for children and teens in Singapore. Starting in early 2026, age assurance solutions will be rolled out across Google products, using machine learning to distinguish younger users from adults. The aim is to automatically tailor experiences on Search, YouTube, Maps, and Google Play to be more age-appropriate, helping parents and guardians feel more confident about their children’s online activities.

Smarter protections across Google products

The new system will trigger automatic safety settings for users estimated to be under 18, creating a safer default environment. Highlights include:

  • Google Maps: Timeline features will be disabled for minors to protect location sharing and historical data exposure.
  • Google Play: Access to adult-only apps will be blocked, reducing exposure to inappropriate content and monetization schemes aimed at older audiences.
  • Google Search: SafeSearch filters will be switched on by default, helping to screen out explicit material from search results.
  • YouTube: Built-in digital wellbeing tools will guide younger users with break reminders, bedtime nudges, and safeguards against excessive viewing of certain content.

When a user is misidentified as a minor, adults can verify their age using an ID or compatible selfie verification. This ensures uninterrupted access to Google’s broader services for those who are legally adults while maintaining the protective measures for younger users.

Addressing parental concerns in Singapore

The move aligns with rising parental concerns about children encountering harmful or inappropriate content online. A recent survey of digital parenting in Singapore highlighted persistent worries about online safety, privacy, and the potential for exposure to risky material. Google’s age assurance is designed as a proactive, built-in barrier that complements existing parental controls and education programs.

Community advocates welcomed the announcement, noting that technology alone cannot replace guidance from families and educators. Still, safety-by-design features like age assurance can create more trustworthy digital spaces and reduce the temptation or ability for children to bypass simple age gates. Parents described the rollout as a thoughtful, necessary layer of protection that supports responsible digital citizenship.

Creators for Impact: raising awareness through content

In parallel with product updates, Google is investing in education through its YouTube Creators for Impact 2025 programme. Now in its fourth year, the initiative will involve six local creators who will produce content to raise awareness about cyberbullying, harassment, and other online harms. These creators will participate in expert workshops and dialogue sessions before releasing videos intended to spark conversations and provide trusted resources for younger audiences. Since its 2022 launch, Creators for Impact has become an Asia-first programme that empowers creators to drive positive digital change.

A shared responsibility for safer online spaces

Google emphasises that protecting children online requires collaboration beyond technology alone. A multi-stakeholder approach—encompassing families, educators, communities, and industry players—will be essential for sustained impact. Age assurance solutions add a robust layer of protection while Google continues to offer tools like parental controls, digital literacy resources, and safety features across its ecosystem.

For parents, educators, and youths alike, these steps point to a safer digital environment where technology can be used confidently and responsibly, with reduced risks of harmful online experiences.
