Police identify person of interest in Cotabato City SK chair ambush
Authorities in Cotabato City have confirmed the investigation into one of two gunmen who ambushed and killed a Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) chairperson and his brother in the city’s busy commercial district over the weekend. The revelation comes as investigators review CCTV footage from business establishments and city government cameras to establish a direct link to the crime.
What happened
The victims, Prince Mohaz Matanog, the SK chairperson of Barangay Poblacion 5, and his brother Muamar Matanog, were traveling in a car along Sinsuat Avenue around 10 a.m. Saturday when two men on a motorcycle opened fire. Both men died at a hospital after being declared dead on arrival. The incident disrupted a typically bustling area and has prompted a heightened police presence in nearby neighborhoods.
Investigation progress
Police Colonel Jibin Bongcayao, the city police director, said the PNP has identified a person of interest who may be directly linked to the crime. He noted that authorities are actively pursuing the lead while cross-referencing CCTV footage with other evidence to narrow down suspects. The identity of the individual of interest has not been released publicly as the investigation continues.
Officer involved in the ambush
Bongcayao added that a responding police officer sustained a gunshot wound during a confrontation with the suspects as shots were exchanged. The wounded officer is receiving treatment as investigators work to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to Saturday’s deadly exchange of fire.
Rewards and community impact
In a bid to accelerate the case, Cotabato City Mayor Bruce Matabalao announced a cash reward of ₱500,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. The move reflects the community’s concern about safety in the commercial district and the vulnerability of public servants in the line of duty.
The news has prompted calls for a thorough review of security measures around key public spaces and youth councils, including SK chapters, to deter similar violence in the future. Local authorities emphasize that every lead will be pursued to bring the perpetrators to justice and restore a sense of security for residents and city workers alike.
