Lausanne Triumphs in a Thrilling Match Against Lugano

The Lausanne hockey team returned from their away game in the Tessin with a breathtaking 5-4 victory against HC Lugano, demonstrating remarkable character and determination. This match recap is brought to you by our main partner, Vaudoise Assurances.

A Calm First Period

The first period began as a cautious round of observation, lasting about 10 minutes. Although Lausanne had two power play opportunities, they were unable to score. Ironically, it was the HC Lugano that struck first despite Lausanne dominating the shots (15 to 6 in the first period). Lugano capitalized on a rebound left by goaltender Connor Hughes. However, Ken Jäger managed to equalize with less than three minutes remaining, scoring his first goal of the season. This allowed both teams to head to the locker room with a tied score.

A Goal Fest in the Second Period

The second period kicked off with Lausanne putting immediate pressure on Lugano’s net but failing to gain the lead. An unfortunate penalty for Lausanne allowed Lugano’s star player, Luca Fazzini, to put them ahead. At one point, the home team led by two goals. Nevertheless, the Lions were undeterred. Benjamin Bougro scored his sixth goal of the season with a beautifully executed one-on-one breakaway. Just a minute later, Jason Fuchs converted a power play opportunity, equalizing the score once again.

Decisive Final Period

With the momentum swinging in Lausanne’s favor after tying the game at 3-3, Drake Caggiula took the lead for the first time in the match after 50 minutes. However, a subsequent penalty allowed Canadian player Michael Sgarbossa to net a second goal, leveling the score yet again. HC Lugano aggressively pursued the win in the final period, outshooting Lausanne 12 to 4. Nevertheless, Connor Hughes and his teammates maintained their composure under pressure.

It was defenseman Erik Brannström who eventually secured the win for Lausanne with a deflected shot five minutes before the final buzzer. Despite Lausanne’s defensive lapses and struggles on the power play, the team showed incredible resilience, reaffirming that a Lion never admits defeat. With this victory, Lausanne secured three points from the Cornèr Arena and reclaimed the second position in the National League standings.

Player of the Match: Benjamin Bougro

Benjamin Bougro, a fourth-line forward, had an outstanding start to the season. Typically, this line focuses on defensive and physical play, but Bougro has defied expectations. At just 22 years old, he has established himself effectively within the LHC’s fourth line. Last season, he scored three goals over 46 matches. Remarkably, in just seven matches this season, he has already doubled that total with six goals. Tonight, Bougro’s well-executed breakaway sparked Lausanne’s comeback, showcasing the significance of both him and the fourth line. Coach Geoff Ward can rely on them in any circumstance.

Upcoming Matches for the Lions

As Lausanne looks ahead, fans can expect more thrilling performances from their Lions. The upcoming matches will be crucial in maintaining their position in the league and showcasing the incredible talent and resilience of the team.
