Current State of Corn Production in the Visayas
Traditionally, the Visayas region, with the exception of Cebu, has been characterized by low corn production levels. Delos Reyes expressed optimism about this changing, especially with the congress attracting over 500 stakeholders from Western, Central, and Eastern Visayas, as well as the Negros Island Region. The event aimed to foster collaboration and encourage more robust efforts in corn production.
Why Corn?
With only 47,000 hectares dedicated to corn cultivation in Western Visayas, there is significant room for growth. DA-6 Regional Director Dennis Arpia pointed out that corn production doesn’t require extensive water resources during its initial stages, making it a suitable crop for areas lacking adequate irrigation, particularly during the dry summer months.

Iloilo province has been identified as having considerable potential for expanding corn production.
