Martigny Celebrates Family Caregivers
At the end of October, Martigny will shine a spotlight on the essential role of family caregivers through a series of events organized by the Réseau seniors martignerain. These initiatives aim to inform, raise awareness, and recognize those who provide daily support to their loved ones.
Engagement for Caregivers: A Comprehensive Program
In observance of the Journée cantonale des proches aidants on October 30, a diverse program is set to unfold, featuring conferences, information stands, and a special film screening. Coordinated by the City’s social delegate, the Réseau seniors martignerain collaborates with numerous local partners to ensure a comprehensive approach to the needs and challenges faced by caregivers.
Evening Conferences: “Who Helps the Caregivers?”
On Wednesday, October 29, a conference at L’Epicentre will tackle the critical question, “Who Helps the Caregivers?” From 18:30 to 20:30, attendees will hear testimonials and insights that address the often-invisible struggles and necessities associated with caregiving. Esteemed speakers include Marie-Noëlle Gross from the Association Proches Aidants Valais and writer Nicole von Kaenel, who will share her experiences and those of her son Thomas, a young caregiver since the age of 15. The evening promises to be enlightening, with an emphasis on intergenerational discussions and a warm reception to follow.
Information Stand at the Weekly Market
On Thursday, October 30, from 8:30 to 13:30, an information stand will be set up at the Marché hebdomadaire on Avenue de la Gare. This initiative is designed to present local services and resources available for family caregivers. Members from the Réseau seniors martignerain, the Association Proches Aidants Valais, and the Croix-Rouge Valais will be available to address inquiries, distribute updated brochures titled “Les Seniors dans la Ville”, and foster community engagement around caregiver issues.
Evening Meetings on Supporting Caregivers
Later that same day, the Fondation Le Castel will host another significant event, themed “Caregiver: Navigating Uncharted Territory”. From 18:30 to 21:00, attendees will learn how to improve their caregiving capabilities by understanding the challenges and solutions available. Presentations will be led by experts including Françoise Besson, an educator, and Catherine Poidevin-Girard, director at Les Acacias day care facility, alongside nurse Erika Burrin Théoduloz. Participants will engage in discussions about loyalty, guilt, and exploring potential support systems.
Ciné Senior: “Forever” Documentary Screening
On Monday, November 3, the celebrations culminate with the Ciné Senior screening of the Swiss documentary “Pour toujours”, directed by Fanny Bräuning. This poignant film, recognized at DOK Leipzig 2018 and Soleure 2019, follows the journey of Annette and Niggi as they navigate love and resilience in the face of illness. The screening will take place at Cinéma Corso at 14:30, followed by a delightful social gathering with refreshments provided by Cinérive and Pro Senectute. Tickets are priced at CHF 12, while conferences remain free with prior registration required.
Encouraging Dialogue and Support for Caregivers
Through these initiatives, Martigny highlights the vital role of family caregivers and encourages open dialogue on a subject that resonates deeply with many families. By bringing awareness and offering support, the city acknowledges the invaluable contributions of those who care for their loved ones.
