In recent years, the fight against cancer has brought countless communities together, and the latest event held at Parc Daniel-Johnson was no exception. Organized by the Fondation québécoise du cancer (FQC), this gathering attracted dozens of citizens passionate about raising awareness for cancer. Participants included family members, friends, volunteers, and cancer survivors, all united by a common purpose.
A Supportive Atmosphere
Many participants walked in support of loved ones battling the disease or in memory of those who have lost their lives to cancer. Despite the serious nature of cancer, the atmosphere at the event was filled with joy and hope. Music played throughout the day, accompanied by touching testimonies shared by participating teams on the main stage. The resilience exhibited by attendees was palpable and truly inspiring.
Personal Stories of Strength
One of the most powerful testimonies came from Rose-Marie Paré, a 30-year-old woman diagnosed with brain cancer at just 28. Despite undergoing surgery and enduring treatments for this incurable illness, Rose-Marie returned to the event for the second time, surrounded by her loved ones. “I want to make the most of this moment with my family and the other participants,” she shared, radiating positivity and determination.
Another inspiring voice was Sylvie Drolet, owner of the Canadian Tire branch in Granby. With a team of 130 employees, Sylvie emphasized how the event not only served as a vital cause but also as an opportunity for team building. “We’ve lost people to cancer, and we all know someone who is fighting this disease. It’s important for us to be here,” she stated, clearly moved by the community’s involvement.
Statistics That Highlight the Crisis
According to the Registre québécois du cancer, 67,219 Quebecers received a cancer diagnosis in 2024, which equates to an alarming 184 new cases each day. Sadly, projections indicate that this figure will continue to rise due to the aging population. In the same year, an estimated 22,800 individuals lost their lives to cancer, confirming that it is now the leading cause of mortality in Quebec.
On average, someone is diagnosed with cancer every eight minutes in Quebec, while a life is lost to the illness every 23 minutes. Remarkably, the five-year survival rate has significantly improved from 53% in the early 1990s to 67% in 2016, showcasing advancements in cancer research and treatment.
The Mission of the Fondation québécoise du cancer
The importance of the FQC cannot be overstated. Their mission, supported by funds raised during such events, is pivotal in providing resources and support to those affected by cancer. “Every step you take becomes a tangible support for those in need,” shared Sandra Asselin, the regional director for FQC in Estrie. The contributions from volunteers and participants allow the foundation to offer over 20,000 complementary therapy sessions—services that are highly sought after and provided at little to no cost.
The foundation also secured over 33,000 nights at various accommodation centers, helping patients minimize travel and access supportive environments tailored to their needs. Additionally, the Info Cancer service has provided over 4,000 interventions, connecting individuals with nurses and specialists ready to support their needs.
A Provincial Movement
The event concluded with a prize draw and the announcement of funds raised from the 3.5 km march, totaling over $45,000 for FQC. Similar marches took place across Quebec from September 6 to 21, contributing to a remarkable total of over $520,000 raised against a provincial goal of $472,000. This collective effort showcases the unwavering strength and solidarity of communities coming together to combat a common adversary—cancer.
