Everybody’s Perfect Festival: Celebrating Queer Cinema

Welcome to Everybody’s Perfect: A Celebration of Queer Cinema

The 12th edition of the Everybody’s Perfect Festival is set to illuminate Geneva from October 10 to 19, 2023. This unique festival focuses on queer cinema, showcasing an impressive lineup of 29 feature films and 22 short films from 26 countries. The eclectic programming emphasizes humor and self-deprecation, marking a shift from mere advocacy to the celebration of creativity and imagination.

A New Approach: Imagination Over Activism

According to the festival’s organizers, “What dominates this year is not the demand for rights, but the vitality of imagination.” This year’s films feature characters who are resilient, creative, inspiring, and joyful. In a world grappling with rising authoritarianism, filmmakers are boldly declaring their pride in being queer, asserting their identities louder than ever.

Opening Film: Innovations in Animation

The festival kicks off with the vibrant animated feature Lesbian Space Princess. This colorful tale follows the story of the shy Princess Saira, who faces the heartache of being dumped by her girlfriend, Kiki. Through a cosmic and playful adventure, the film conveys essential lessons about self-discovery and empowerment for young women, particularly those still navigating their identities.

Swiss Productions: A Local Flair

Among the many exciting films is the documentary Quir, directed by Nicola Bellucci. This film dives deep into the LGBTIQ+ community of Palermo, a kingdom of love and kindness nestled within a conservative society. Additionally, the festival showcases two short films dealing with discrimination in cities like Lausanne, Fribourg, and Geneva, as well as exploring themes of desire in Neuchâtel and workplace dynamics in Ticino.

A Festival for Everyone

Unique in the Romandy region of Switzerland, Everybody’s Perfect is open to audiences of all backgrounds. It brings together a diverse, curious, and intergenerational crowd in a spirit of inclusivity and festivity. The festival also awards several prizes, including the LGBTIQ+ Memory Prize, which rewards the fight for queer rights with a cash prize of 3000 francs, acknowledging the importance of remembering past struggles.

Closing Celebration

The festivities culminate on Saturday, October 18, with a closing party at La Paillette, promising a vibrant atmosphere to celebrate the success of this year’s festival.
