The theme this year is clear: “You are a part of Sweden’s Total Defense.” This initiative highlights the collective responsibility every citizen has in safeguarding our democratic society.
What Does It Mean to Be Part of Total Defense?
Being part of Sweden’s Total Defense means that each individual contributes, to the best of their ability, during times of threat or attack. According to a survey by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB), over half of the population expresses a willingness to join emergency preparedness organizations or enhance their skills in first aid. This enthusiasm is crucial, as it indicates a robust desire amongst Swedes to actively protect our free and democratic way of life.
Basic Preparedness: Be Ready for a Crisis
One of the key messages from MSB is the importance of self-sufficiency during emergencies. Citizens should be prepared to manage for at least a week in case of severe crises or war. This preparation includes stocking up on essential items such as food, water, heat, and necessary medications. MSB offers clear guidelines on how to effectively prepare your household.

Sweden’s Total Defense comprises two main components: the military defense and the civil defense. The military aspects include the Swedish Armed Forces—covering the army, navy, air force, and Home Guard—along with supporting entities like the Defense Materiel Administration and the Total Defense Research Institute.

Civil defense encompasses all facets of society, which includes every resident, governmental bodies, municipalities, regions, businesses, religious communities, associations, and volunteer organizations. In Halland, the County Administrative Board plays a pivotal role in civil defense. Acting as the highest authority for total defense in the region, they hold responsibility for geographical areas. If communication between Halland and the government falters, it is the County Administrative Board that steps in to fulfill government functions. They coordinate both military and civilian defense efforts alongside Civil Area West, the Armed Forces, Region Halland, municipalities, and other stakeholders.

Halland is worth defending, and every person’s contribution is vital. Most community members play their part through essential services like healthcare, childcare, electricity supply, transportation, and elder care, all of which keep society functioning smoothly.
