Primary Schools: A Front Line in Tackling Vision Issues

The Importance of Vision in Learning

When it comes to identifying hidden vision problems in children, primary school teachers are ideally positioned to notice early signs that may affect learning. Despite their crucial role in education, many teachers lack specific training to recognize these issues. Fortunately, recent developments are set to change that.

Introducing ‘See The Change’

A new short book titled See The Change, authored by Kilcullen optician Nichola Kennedy, aims to raise awareness of the often-overlooked link between vision and learning. Kennedy is one of only three certified neurodevelopmental and behavioral optometrists in the country, and she has already made a profound impact on the lives of over 80 patients whose learning abilities were hindered by undiagnosed vision problems.

Transforming Lives Through Better Vision

Through a combination of tailored eyewear and targeted eye exercises, Kennedy has successfully addressed various vision-related challenges. At the book launch event held at Woodbine Books in Kilcullen, she shared powerful testimonials, noting that some referrals came from as far away as Cork and Kerry. Kennedy’s work reveals the importance of looking beyond traditional eye tests, as many hidden vision issues go unnoticed.

Innovative Hybrid Approach

To extend her reach, she has developed a hybrid treatment approach that combines personal assessment with digital resources. This method is facilitated through a hub called Brainsight, which features 28 short instructional videos. Patients can attend a one-on-one session at her practice and subsequently continue their therapy remotely through WhatsApp. “This means they can benefit from ongoing support, even if they live far away,” Kennedy explains.

Understanding Hidden Vision Problems

Kennedy emphasizes that standard eye tests often miss underlying issues affecting children’s learning. She incorporates a deeper analysis of how the eyes and brain work together to process information effectively. For instance, one child had difficulty reading due to faulty 3D vision, which caused overlapping words. After receiving special glasses and exercises, she not only improved her reading ability but also developed a newfound love for it.

Changing Lives One Child at a Time

Another case involved a patient with normal eyesight who couldn’t swiftly shift focus between the blackboard and his book. By providing specialized reading glasses and exercises, the child significantly improved his academic performance. “He’s come on by leaps and bounds,” Kennedy reports, highlighting the transformative power of targeted vision therapy.

Why ‘See The Change’ Matters

Nichola’s interest in vision and learning began during her optometry training, inspired by her mentor, Margaret Barrett. Over the years, she encountered numerous cases where children struggled for reasons that remained unexplained. Her mission is to unravel these mysteries, leading to better outcomes for children and families alike.

The book, which was inspired by a conversation with business coach Mary Grant, serves as a valuable resource for parents who may be questioning whether their child’s learning difficulties stem from vision issues. “Sometimes, the answers are right in front of us, yet we fail to recognize them,” Kennedy notes. The book provides practical tools aimed at improving focus and minimizing frustration, guiding parents on when to seek behavioral optometric evaluation and vision therapy.

Where to Find ‘See The Change’

See The Change is now available at Woodbine Books in Kilcullen and can also be purchased as a Kindle edition on Amazon. By highlighting the importance of vision in the classroom, Kennedy hopes to equip teachers and parents with the knowledge they need to advocate for better learning outcomes for children.
